Susan Gradwell is a  Printmaker & Painter based in Wookey, Wells, Somerset.

Artist's Statement :

Paintings and etchings inspired by buried relics from archaeological finds, with a contemporary twist.

It is the idea of discovery of surviving traces and remains of lost, decayed, buried artefacts from archaeological explorations that continually influences her.

Her inspiration is also drawn from a love of timeless shapes and forms and the decorative qualities of their pattern and ornament.

" The masters of the Japanese tea ceremony used deliberately to drop precious dishes, in order that they might be rebuilt and, thus, be more beautiful than the original. My Japanese porcelain has been repaired with gold, which streaks like lightning across the shattered plate "      Gwyneth Lewis, Sunbathing in the Rain.

After studying at St. Martin's School of Art (BA) and The Central School of Art (MA), Susan worked in London, before moving to the West Country, where she continues to live and work. Her paintings and etchings are regularly selected for Open Competition Exhibitions, including the RA Summer Exhibition, London, and the RWA, Bristol. Her work is to be found in collections in the UK, France, Spain, Australia and the USA.
